In the Kalevala, Hiisi lives in the forest and is the owner of an animal (e.g. an elk, a gelding, a foal or a hound). Since Christian times, Hiisi has come to be equated with the devil. Originally, the word hiisi referred to a sacred grove of pre-Christian times, a holy place set apart from the secular world.

Kalevala were a Finnish progressive/psychedelic rock band formed by Lido Salonen in 1969. Their 1971 debut album People No Names features Harri Saksala of Apollo fame. The group released two more albums before splitting in 1978. 2.

Finnish kalevala music

In Finland's national epic, Kalevala, the mage Väinämöinen makes the first kantele from the jawbone of a giant pike and a few hairs from Hiisi 's stallion. The music it makes draws all the forest creatures near to wonder at its beauty. The name of the band is derived from the Finnish national epic. The group chose this name because lead vocalist Xenia Markevich has a Finnish background: both her parents are Finnish. Moreover, the band is inspired by ancient Finnish and Sami music, Finno-Ugric legends and contemporary Finnish music like Finntroll, Korpiklaani etc. During a period of famine and cholera in the early nineteenth century, the Finnish physician Elias Lönnrot travelled through Karelia, an ethnic region that now straddles the border of Finland and Russia. Here he heard folk singing, backed by an instrument called the kantele (a zither formed from pike bones in the Kalevala).

Finnish folk music is typically influenced by Karelian traditional tunes and lyrics of the Kalevala metre.

Children, streets, towns, and businesses are named after Kalevala characters, and Finnish art, music, dance, and theater frequently draw on Kalevala themes. Internationally, the Kalevala is recognized as a masterpiece of world literature.

The Ensemble first came to the US in 1991 as a university group with the Petrozavodsk State University. They have since released two recordings on the Gadfly label, The Karelian Folk Music Ensemble (an all-instrumental CD) and Ingrian Folk Songs , which is a set of songs from the region.
