2016-01-11 · Lacan maintains this succinctly, “in the scopic field, the gaze is outside, I am looked at, that is to say, I am a picture…what determines me, at the most profound level, in the visible, is the gaze that is outside…one can see at the perceptual level, how the screen re-establishes things, in their status as real. ”

As well as theorizing anamorphosis, or visual resistance, as a model of the dialectic between the eye and the gaze, the seminars function to lure and frustrate their auditor-readers.

Furthermore, its role can be extended to many visual media. The gaze is thus one of the manifestations of the object a, the other being the voice, which Lacan contributed to Freud's part-objects: the breast, faeces and the phallus. The gaze is a manifestation of the Real in the field of vision. The "gaze" is a double-sided term. There must be someone to gaze and there may be someone to gaze back. To give the gaze is to perceive that one is looking at an object. To set oneself at gaze is to expose oneself to view or display oneself.

Lacan gaze

Lacan extrapolated that the gaze and the effects of the gaze might be produced by an inanimate object, and thus a person's awareness of any object can induce the self-awareness of also being an object in the material world of reality. The philosophic and psychologic importance of the gaze is in the meeting of the face and the gaze, because only Freud defined ‘The Oedipus Complex’: in which the child sees him/herself in the mother and identifies through her. Similarly, Lacan defined ‘The Mirror Stage’, in which small children recognise themselves in the mirror (as opposed to the mother), thus seeing their body as a whole instead of as unconnected body parts. Lacan saw the Gaze as one of the main manifestations of the four fundamental concepts of psychoanalysis: the unconscious, repetition, transference and drive. For Lacan, the Gaze gives structure and stability to our fantasies of Self and Other. While emphasising more on the phenomenological-existential analysis of the issue of individual recognition Sartre presents gaze as a strong alienating force released from another powerful subject affecting the intersubjective power relation, Lacan, stands on a non-reciprocal relation between seeing and seen by making a difference between the eyes of the subject that looks at and the gaze which is on the side of the object without having any capacity to become a subject. Lacan was born in Paris, the eldest of Émilie and Alfred Lacan's three children.
